Pfizer Inc. (PFE) case

PharmaWire reports that analysts are looking ahead to the tafamidis patent trial involving Pfizer, as recent court developments begin to influence investor sentiment.

Pfizer is taking legal action against three generic drug manufacturers, including Cipla (CIPLA) and Hikma Pharmaceuticals (HIK), on the grounds that they are infringing its Vyndamax patent. The defendants have challenged the validity of that patent.

Current commentary suggests there might be early signs of a Pfizer victory emerging from pre-trial developments, which include the narrowing of the case after two patents were taken off the table on 21 April.

A partial consent judgment agreed by the parties saw Dexcel drop its challenges to the validity and enforceability of U.S. Patent Nos. 7,214,695 and 7,214,696, with the court granting judgment in favor of Pfizer on those claims.

This narrowing of the case, alongside Pfizer’s assertion of broad infringement claims under the ‘441 patent, has been interpreted favorably by some analysts as a positive signal for Pfizer’s position.

Impact on share prices

PharmaWire notes that equity analysts at Mizuho have highlighted that investors have generally taken a more conservative stance, modeling patent protection only through the end of 2028.

At the same time, Mizuho believes Pfizer has a better-than-Street probability of prevailing on the 2035 patent or of reaching a highly favorable settlement outcome.

The trial outcome remains uncertain, and these early signals are not conclusive. News flow during the trial may offer some short-term directional read-through for investors, although translating daily developments into clear positioning may prove challenging.

The five-day bench trial is scheduled to run until May 1 unless a settlement is reached beforehand. A final ruling is unlikely to be immediate and is typically delivered weeks or months after proceedings conclude.

Impact on BridgeBio Pharma Inc. (BBIO)

PharmaWire reports that the case also has implications across the ATTR-CM landscape, including for BridgeBio Pharma, where attention is focused on the durability of its Attruby franchise.

BridgeBio currently trades at around $73.90, and analysts view the outcome of the Pfizer case as a potentially significant driver.

Mizuho highlighted that a favorable outcome for Pfizer would benefit BridgeBio and could represent the single largest potential catalyst for its stock this year. In that scenario, analysts see the possibility of shares reaching the $100-$110 range or higher.

For now, PharmaWire frames the latest developments as an early indication from the courthouse that Pfizer may maintain its patent exclusivity. While not decisive, this is being interpreted as a positive signal for more bullish positioning as the trial approaches.
