XRP and Bitcoin Trade in Lockstep as Ledger Upgrade Nears

Bitrue says both assets peaked Sept. 3 after U.S. jobs data; an XRPL amendment this week will test whether the link is structural.

Bitcoin and XRP have moved almost in unison since Sept. 3, and Bitrue Research Institute says this week will show whether that link is just a shared macro trade or something more lasting.

Both assets peaked on the same day after stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data reset Federal Reserve rate expectations. Bitcoin reached $82,200. XRP reached $1.48. Both then gave back a similar share of those gains. Bitcoin has since held a range near $78,700 to $80,500. XRP has held about $1.38 to $1.43.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in nearly $1 billion last week, extending a three-week run of about $3.8 billion. Spot XRP ETFs added about $19 million in the same week, lifting cumulative inflows since launch to about $1.68 billion. Bitrue said both products kept attracting money through the pullback, a pattern more typical of systematic allocators than of traders chasing price.

“The degree of synchronization between Bitcoin and XRP over the past two weeks is notable because it is not driven by the same underlying asset; it is driven by the same macro variable,” Bitrue Research Institute noted in its September 8 analysis. “When two assets with different fundamentals move in near-perfect lockstep, it usually means the market is pricing macro risk rather than asset-specific value. That creates an interesting setup when one of them receives a catalyst the other does not.”

That catalyst is the fixCleanup3_3_0 amendment on the XRP Ledger. If validator support stays above 80 percent, Bitrue said the change is due around Sept. 11. It would upgrade vaults, the lending protocol, automated market makers and other ledger functions. The firm stressed that the amendment does not change XRP’s supply, create new demand or alter its regulatory status. It does advance infrastructure that institutions watch for decentralized finance and tokenized real-world assets.

“Amendment activations on XRPL have historically generated positive ecosystem sentiment,” Bitrue Research Institute observed. “But this one lands in an environment where XRP has been trading as a high-beta macro asset rather than on its own fundamentals. Whether the ledger development story reasserts itself, or whether macro continues to dominate, is the more interesting question than the amendment itself.”

August CPI is also due Friday, Sept. 11, roughly the same day as the amendment. Soft inflation would likely lift both assets. Hot inflation would pressure both. Bitrue said the test is in the spread: if Bitcoin falls and XRP holds above $1.43 or pushes toward $1.50, the two-week correlation looks circumstantial. If both drop by the same proportion, the market is still treating XRP as a high-beta proxy for Bitcoin.

The institute argued the distinction matters for portfolio construction. Dubai’s Land Department has tokenized property titles on XRPL. Tokenized gold has settled on the ledger. Ripple Custody is building regulated secondary-market infrastructure. If XRP still trades only with Bitcoin, Bitrue said, those use cases are not yet showing up in price.
