Madrid Will Close Mass Vaccination Centers If No More Doses Arrive

The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso , has warned this Friday that if more doses of the vaccines against covid do not arrive, next week ” mass vaccination centers will be closed “, such as the Isabel Zendal Hospital or the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

“It is Friday and the Community of Madrid is still, except with the Pfizers, we do not know how many doses we are going to receive from the Government next week. And as no more arrive, we are going to have to stop vaccination in the large centers. This is foolish, “he said.

In turn, the deputy counselor and the general director of Public Health, Antonio Zapatero and Elena Andradas respectively, explained at a press conference that the problem lies in the lack of AstraZeneca doses , given that Madrid only has a stock of 3,000 vials, which will end between Monday and Tuesday and, therefore, if no more arrive, on Wednesday vaccination in mass centers would have to be stopped. In these spaces, AstraZeneca is being supplied to the 65-70 age group.

“We do not want to get to that point,” said Zapatero, who reiterated the three requests that the Community transferred to the Interterritorial Council on Wednesday: that the application of first doses of all vaccines be prioritized , as Catalunya has also requested, that the age limit for vaccination with AstraZeneca is eliminated and voluntary vaccination with this preparation is allowed for those under 60 years of age and without age limit with the paralyzed doses of Janssen.

Group immunity
On the other hand, Zapatero has calculated that around 45% of the Madrid population is immunized thanks to having received a puncture from the authorized vaccines or because the covid has passed. Despite this, the Community of Madrid remains at extreme risk, with an incidence of 348 cases per 100,000 inhabitants within 14 days.

Although, according to the deputy counselor, the region may be “touching the ceiling of the fourth wave” given that the balance of infections in the last seven days shows a “stable trend.”

Likewise, Ayuso has rejected the ban on smoking on terraces proposed by the Ministry of Health, and has branded it as an “occurrence”. “We are going to leave the people in peace that there are enough regulations, in fact, there are in excess,” he said at a ceremony in Valdebebas. For Ayuso, after “a year or so” of pandemic, there is no need to “introduce more regulations, more regulations, to confuse citizens.”
