BAE Systems Ordnance Systems Inc. has been awarded a contract worth up to $8.8 billion by the U.S. Army to continue operating the Holston Army Ammunition Plant (HSAAP) for the next 10 years. BAE Systems has been managing the facility since 1999 and during this time developed innovative products like IMX-101, which is a safer and more effective alternative to TNT in artillery. The company has also been working to modernize the facility to ensure its reliability in the future.
“Our team is proud to continue our work as the operating contractor of the Holston Army Ammunition Plant,” said John Swift, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems Ordnance Systems Inc. “BAE Systems is committed to delivering safe, reliable products for our customers at a time when it matters most, while modernizing the Holston Army Ammunition Plant to meet increased demand.”
The Holston Army Ammunition Plant is a facility owned by the government and operated by contractors that produces explosives for the U.S. military. The plant has been operational since World War II, and BAE Systems has invested in modernization to create a safer work environment for employees, develop reliable munitions for soldiers, and implement cleaner environmental practices for the community.
It is important for national security to modernize ammunition plants into state-of-the-art chemical processing facilities while continuing production. BAE Systems’ history of modernizing while also manufacturing will allow the U.S. Army to expand the capabilities for explosives and munitions manufacturing without sacrificing readiness.
Apart from operating the Holston Army Ammunition Plant, BAE Systems Ordnance Systems Inc. has been operating the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Virginia since 2012. The plant manufactures propellants for the U.S. military.
