Save the date for the upcoming Butoh performance featuring Akihito Ichihara and dancers on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 8 p.m. at Belvedere Plaza Battery Park, Manhattan. The free performance will feature Akihito Ichihara and his students wearing costumes designed by Mr. Ichihara.
Akihito Ichihara is a Japanese Butoh dancer known for his work with the renowned Sankai Juku troupe. He began his career in the 1980s and was inspired by Sankai Juku to pursue a Butoh career. He has since been involved in various projects and has collaborated with significant Butoh dancers and troupes. In 2022, he founded the dance company ELF, which has received critical acclaim for its workshops and performances worldwide.
Based on the “Sankai Juku Method,” Ichihara’s Butoh dance aims to raise the excellence of professional ballet, modern, and contemporary dancers. He also hopes to promote empathy and mutual respect through dance and contribute to peace efforts worldwide. ELF advocates for a “Dance Project without Borders” to transcend borders and connect people despite their differences.
