Yuri Kawada is highly renowned for being an interdisciplinary designer who focuses on typography, branding, and editorial design. As a half-Korean and Japanese living in the US, she blends her multiple cultural backgrounds to push the boundaries of art and design, making it a point to tell a story through her artworks. Beyond her art, her impressive portfolio also includes designs in advertising, with interface design, print marketing, brand marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, and editorial design, to name a few.
Her keen interest in art started at a young age. The various colors, mediums, and processes that come along with creating art have led her to pursue it as a passion and career. Through her education at the Parsons School of Design in New York and the University of Southern California, Kawada has since been exposed to the art of digital design.
As a half-Korean and Japanese artist, her diverse cultural background has influenced her art immensely. She draws inspiration from Korean designs which are more playful and colorful, while Japanese designs are more centered on organic shapes and natural materials. The blend of both cultures allows her to offer diverse creative ideas from different standpoints.
An artist in the digital age
As a young creative, Kawada admits that being an artist in this digital age is challenging. “As technology is advancing, a lot of young artists and designers have to keep up with today’s design trends. As an artist and designer, it is hard to create something original because it already probably exists on the internet or it has already been seen somewhere else. However, I can also say that nothing is original as we get ideas from being inspired by other works and people,” she shares.
To overcome this challenge, Kawada utilizes newly developed technologies to find new ways to apply them in her work. She thought of blending in traditional and digital art space by creating a personal virtual exhibition through Spatial.io, a metaverse platform that allows more interactive viewing of a virtual gallery.
Kawada aims to let viewers worldwide have an immersive experience of her digital art pieces. In her digital exhibition, she presents all her beautiful and creative digital art pieces accessible to people in the comfort of where they are. The artworks in her exhibit were created with various mediums, showcasing different cultural implications and stories. Viewers can read through them in the description as if coursing through an actual physical exhibit.
